Make Time to be Active

By David Kittner

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful winter we are having. We are a
week away from being half way through winter, and that can be a great thing
depending upon your attitude. With all the snow we have received, there
is lots of winter fun just outside your door. For most people, winter is usually
a time to slow down and reduce their activity levels, fill up on their
favourite comfort foods, and grumble about the weather. Oh ya, and don’t
forget all the unwanted pounds of ugly body fat that you take on.

We all know that getting outside at this time of year is crucial to maintaining
a healthy mood. There are many activities that you can enjoy as a family this
winter: hiking at Mono Cliffs, cross country skiing at Monora Park, downhill
skiing at Hockley Valley, outdoor skating at Mono Centre, snow shoeing at
Island Lake Conservation, and the list goes on and on.

But before heading outside to participate in your favourite outdoor activity make
sure you check the weather and dress accordingly. Ensure that all exposed skin
is protected to prevent frostbite. Depending on the temperature, frostbite can occur
quite quickly if  the skin is left unprotected.

While performing your activity your body temperature will rise and you will begin
to sweat, or perspire depending on your perspective. By wearing clothing made
from polyester material you can be sure that any sweat you generate will be wicked
away from your skin ensuring you stay dry and comfortable. That way, you will be
able to enjoy your outdoor activity even more.

The other thing to remember is to make sure you stay hydrated. Hydration is as
important during the winter months as it is during the summer.Water is your best choice
for maintaining your hydration levels. And remember, if you start to feel thirsty,
the dehydration process has already started. Be sure to drink water on a regular basis,
especially while you are performing your activity.

To compliment your outdoor activities, Athletic Foundations will be offering
active programming for children and adults during the months of February and March.
New this year will be the addition of a fitness bootcamp for adults. Afterall,
health and fitness is a family affair and what better way to role model a healthy
lifestyle for your children, then to participate in a fun and supportive fitness class.
Not to mention the side affects of burning that ugly, unwanted body fat that I
spoke of earlier. Also new this year, will be a class for 4 and 5 year olds as well
as 13-15 year olds. An announcement with the dates and times will follow shortly.

I am always open to suggestions as to what programs/activities are of interest to you and
your family. Please send me a comment with your thoughts, questions or concerns.

In health and happiness,

David
